Of course, a lot of SEO experts agree with the fact that it is a waste because you get no link weight for that links you drop on those sites. Nofollow links are not crawled by the search engine spiders. Thus, you get no credit for ranking in the search engine results page. Also, you do not get any credit for boosting your page rank.
However, the other side of light with nofollow links is that it can generate voluminous traffic, and even more than what you are targeting. Twitter, for instance, is a great tool in generating web traffic. The links that you post in your “tweets” may not contribute to the link popularity of your site; however, it would popularize your site through the traffic that it can generate if you have done your “twittering” more frequent.
In Twitter, it is more advantageous if you have more number of followed “Twitterers” as well as great number of “Twitterers” who are following you. The more followers and more people you have followed, the more audience for the link that you post in your “tweets” you have.
